1.Eating with Braces
You need to protect your orthodontic appliances (Braces) when you eat for as long as you are wearing it.
For the first day or so,
- Stick to soft foods
- Avoid tough meats, hard breads &rotis, parathas, raw vegetables.
Foods to Avoid :
- Crunchy foods: popcorn, chips, burgers, toasted bread, pizza,Shavarma
- Sticky foods: dry fruits, chocolates, gum
- Hard foods: nuts, candy, hard sandwich
- Raw vegetables & fruits: corn, carrots, cucumber, coconut, raw mango, guava, apples, sugarcane
- Non veg: chicken / meat (can eat soft part in small pieces)
- Chewing on hard things (for example; pens, pencils, biting fingernails, opening bottle caps etc) can damage the braces.
‘Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.’
2.General Soreness
You may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days.
If the tenderness is severe, take mild analgesic like Paracetamol or Nimesulide
The lips, cheeks, and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the surface of the braces. You can put wax on the braces to lessen this.
3.Loosening of Teeth
This is to be expected throughout treatment. Don't worry! It's normal. Teeth must loosen first so they can be moved. The teeth will again become rigidly fixed in their new corrected positions.
4. Brushing
- Rinse your mouth thoroughly after every meal.
- Brush twice daily: morning & night just before bed
- Brush under, above, behind and around all surfaces of
- every tooth and bracket.
- Be sure to check after rinsing, and if your teeth and brackets are not clean and shining... Brush Again!
- Gargle using Mouthwash as prescribed.
5. Care of Appliances (Braces)
To successfully complete the treatment plan, the patient must work together with the orthodontist. Care of the appliance is important; damaged appliances lengthen the treatment time.
6. Athletics/sports persons
If you play sports, a protective mouth guard is advised for playing contact sports.
In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the braces, contact your doctor immediately.
